Happy World Health Day! Here's some quack medicine on display at The Oddities Museum. These rectal dilators were first patented in May 1892 by Frank E. Young. and claimed to treat a variety of ailments. The Food and Drug Administration would later sue Dr. Young in 1940 as they found no evidence to indicate that the product could deliver on its medical promises. Dr. Young failed to appear in court and his products were ordered to be destroyed.

Carnival chalkware figures were popular carnival prizes in the late 19th century and early 20th century. They are quite charming and come in a variety of forms, often taking the shape of humans or dogs. These are formed from a chalk-like plaster and painted with vibrant colors. There is wear over time, but as you can see, chalkware retains its colors remarkably well! These are just a few of our chalkware figures from our large collection in the circus area of the museum.

Need some electroshock therapy? ⚡ First manufactured in 1854 by W.H. Burnap of New York, this is The Davis & Kidder Patent Magneto-Electric Machine for Nervous Diseases. To be used as intended, the patient would hold the handles in their hands (or place them elsewhere on their body) and an electric current would be sent through them by turning the crank. The instructions say to "increase the strength only to that degree most agreeable to the patient." Yes, this is a hand cranked electroshock therapy machine! How about that! It claims to be endorsed by leading physicians in the United States and Europe, which, given the understanding of electricity at the time, may actually be true. The writing on the device itself claims to be able to treat toothaches, tic doloreux, and neuralgia. Science has come a long way since 1854 and so has the way in which we use electricity for health.
