Happy World Health Day! Here's some quack medicine on display at The Oddities Museum. These rectal dilators were first patented in May 1892 by Frank E. Young. and claimed to treat a variety of ailments. The Food and Drug Administration would later sue Dr. Young in 1940 as they found no evidence to indicate that the product could deliver on its medical promises. Dr. Young failed to appear in court and his products were ordered to be destroyed.

They are quite charming and come in a variety of forms, often taking the shape of humans or dogs. These are formed from a chalk-like plaster and painted with vibrant colors. There is wear over time, but as you can see, chalkware retains its colors remarkably well! These are just a few of our chalkware figures from our large collection in the circus area of the museum.
