Puppet Workshop: Patterning with Penny, brought to you by Pucking Fuppet
Learn how to take your art to new dimensions! Along with sculpting and carving, flat patterning is an essential skill in the fabricator's creative toolkit. It enables the artist to create 3-D forms from flat, sheet stock materials. The techniques are applicable to puppet and creature making, wearables and props. The process opens up a world of options for makers including scaling an object as well as creating endless modifications and replications.
This workshop will cover the basics of:
- When to choose to pattern a form rather than moldng, casting, sculpting or carving
- Recommended tools and materials, how to choose them and where to find them
- How to create and pull a pattern from a model
- The differences in patterning in foam and thermoplastics
- Various methods for enlarging the pattern to the desired scale
- Steps and techniques for cutting and manipulating materials and assembling the pattern
- Steps and materials for finishing
- Tips and Tricks
- Resources for supporting further learning
Participants should bring:
- A model of something they's like to replicate. (plastic, hardened clay or plaster) of at least 4"-6" in size. It shouldn't be something that could be damaged if scratched with a knife. If this will be first steps for an intended project, the model should be an original of no less than 1/8th the finished size. Models will be provided for those who simply wish to practice the technique.
- An X-acto knife and fresh blades
